Plot Overview

In case you haven’t read the latest manga by Akira Amano, you’ve been missing out. In the small city of Namimori, Japan, a second rate student at the local middle school gets a big surprise one day. Sawada Tsunayoshi’s mother hires him a home tutor, only he comes to find that his ‘tutor’ is actually a young infant in a fine Italian suit who introduces himself as the world’s greatest hit man, Reborn. Instead of the normal studies that he was planning on getting pounded into him, Tsuna was told that he is the successor of the ninth boss of the Vongola Mafia Family. Eventually he accepts his fate and gains six trusted guardians who include Lambo Bovino, Kyouya Hibari, Rokudo Mukuro/ Chrome Dokuro, Gokudera Hayato, Yamamoto Takeshi, and Sasagawa Ryouhei. However, everything is turned upside down when they are sent nine years and ten months into the future. Here the world, along with the Vongola, has been sent into chaos by the Millefiore. As the mystery behind the 7^3 unfolds Tsuna will go against all odds to save not only the family but the world. Just maybe with the help of the dying will flames, he’ll be able to do it.

Akira Amano was born in 1973 in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Her most acclaimed work, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, was started in late 2003. It was printed as a one shot preview in Weekly Shonen Jump. After gaining rave reviews for the story she recieved a serialization for the series on April 4th, 2004. Still she continues to use traditional drawing methods of the mangaka. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! has since been adapted into a prime time anime series, light novels and at least four different video games. Then on October 3rd, 2006 Shonen Jump Advance started english productions of the manga and have sold 7 million copies.

Above are the protectors of the 7^3, the Arcobaleno which translates directly from Italian meaning ‘rainbow’. Pictured first (left to right) is Skull who, after being turned into one of the acclaimed infants, is partners with an octopus. He often looks up to both Reborn and Colonello calling them ‘sempai’. Reborn is the most trusted hitman of the Vongola family who teams up with a shapeshifting cameleon named Leon. He is given the task of breeding Tsuna into the 10th generation boss of the Vongola. Colonello is the former student of Lal Mirch who took her place during the process of the curse. He, however, was fully cursed and given the blue rain pacifier and works together with a falcon and a trusty anti tank weapon. Fong was the master to I-pin but otherwise not much is known about him. Verde is the scientist who created the box weapons in the 10 year later arc. Viper, also known as Marmon, is a member of the Vongola assassin team called Varia and is later known to have commited suicide after being saved by Colonello. His partner is the lizard Phantasma. Lastly is Luce, the boss of the Gigilo Nero family, who is only known because of her connection to her daughter, Uni, and relationship with Ganma.

Members (top to bottom) include Gola Mosca, Levithan, Marmon, Xanxus, Lussaria, Superbia Squalo, and Belphegor. On the other side (same order) are the gaurdians of the 10th generation Vongola boss. As of May 9th, 2009 the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! manga series will have 240 published chapters, or targets as they are more commonly refered to as, in Weekly Shonen Jump. There will be 132 episodes airing for the popular anime series broadcast by TV Tokyo, Animax, and AT-X. Both continue to be updated weekly, give for special holidays or illness.

Finding Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Manga

Though its such a popular manga, Reborn! (KHR’s American title) is very difficult to find because it is a Shonen Jump Advance novel and in limited print in the U.S. However you can buy it at your local Borders/Waldenbooks store. Its often easier to buy it online because of its difficulty to find on store store shelves.

Q: What draws you to Katekyo Hitman Reborn! ?
Christina: The art style is my favorite part. Its very detailed and is unique from other manga stories. The storyline also draws me in. Not only is it about the mafia but, the plot is interesting as well. Especially the fact that one of the greatest hit men is an infant of the Arcobaleno.
Q: What is your favorite part of the writing style?
Christina: I absolutely love the depth she puts into the minor characters. Each one has their own unique story that ties into the plot somehow. Every action made by a minor character could have a great impact on future events in the story. You never know what to look out for.
Q: What would you categorize the art style as?
Christina: I would say that its an equal mix between the action of a shonen series and a comedic series. I love the fact that the reader doesn't get lost in action sequences. They're very easy to follow and understand but, still hold the same impact. Her dialouge is also a strong point in the writing. It makes the reader think more about the overall plot if the story instead of what is happening in each chapter.
Q: Who is your favorite character, why and their importance to the series.
Christina: Rokudo Mukuro of course!, Who doesn't love pineapples? I'm obsessed with the fact that he was an antagonist turned protagonist yet, he still keeps villain like characteristics and behavioral patterns. He is given a very important role in the series by being granted a postion as one of the six guardians to the boss.
Q: Do you feel that the plot progressed after the Ten Year Later arc?
Chrisitina: Definately. It cleared things up that went unanswered in the first part of the series. I also understand more of the value of the ring conflict from part one and the importance of tensions within the Vongola family. With each weekly chapter, I feel that Akira Amano is progressing further than ever into the past yet keeps building on the future.

Though Katekyo Hitman Reborn! was written in Japan, it portrays many ideals that Americans hold dear to them. Our freedom that we swear to allows us to be able to read manga like KHR if we so desire. If we weren’t granted rights like this, stories about the world of the mafia and other crime organizations would be banned. This also embodies the ideal of freedom of speech and the press. My obsession, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, reflects the American ideal of freedom hands down.
